Two Owners.
One Standard.
406 Heating & Cooling is Ethan Stephenson and Robert Immenschuh. We are a veteran-owned HVAC shop in Missoula, and when you book a job we are the two who show up and do it.
Both of our names turn up in our reviews, which is not something a big shop with a rotating crew can say. It is also the reason the work is consistent: there is nobody to hand it off to.

Our story
Born and raised in Montana
We grew up here, which means we do not have to be told what a Missoula winter does to a house. We know what an inversion does to a heat pump that was sized off a chart instead of a load calculation, and we know which parts of town were built without a foot of ductwork in them.
We are veteran-owned. The same dedication and discipline that served our country is what drives the way we do business now: show up when we said, do the work properly, and stand behind it.
What we do not do is push. There is no commission structure here and nobody upstairs setting a sales target, so if a repair is not worth your money we will tell you, and if the smaller system is the right one we will fit the smaller system. Several of our reviews say exactly that, including one from a customer who came to us after being let down by another Missoula company.
We install Mitsubishi Electric and American Standard equipment. Mini-splits and heat pumps are what we fit more of than anything else, and they are usually the honest answer for an older Missoula home that was never built for forced air.

Hours, stated plainly
Monday to Friday, 8am to 5pm
We are not a 24-hour operation and we are not going to tell you we are. Inside our hours we answer fast and get out quickly, which is what our reviews actually say about us. If your furnace is limping rather than dead, calling us on a weekday is a far better outcome than waiting for it to fail on a Sunday.

What people say

The best rating of any HVAC contractor in Missoula. Here is what is behind it, in our customers' own words.
“As an Electrical Contractor there are multiple things that I look for when hiring out subs or recommending them to my clients. The boys at 406 Heating and Cooling are absolutely hands down the best HVAC contractor that I recommend whenever anyone asks for it. They have time and time again, come in within or below customers budget and done amazing work. They are knowledgeable ,craftsmen and most importantly take pride in what they do. Their communication is top notch.”
“I wasn't able to be there for the service appointment, but Ethan and Robert worked directly with my family while I was at work. They quickly diagnosed and fixed our furnace issue, and my wife and elderly mother both commented on how professional, respectful, and easy they were to work with.”
“AMAZING SERVICE. We had originally hired another HVAC company in Missoula and we're incredibly disappointed with their service so we hired 406 Heating & Cooling and they were 1000000x times better.”
“406 Heating and Cooling were very quick in getting us a quote, installing our new unit and removal of our old unit. They were very professional and I will certainly be calling them in the future with any issues with HVAC.”
“We needed an entire system install. They came out and gave us a clear estimate of what was needed and what they would do. they didn't charge us for an estimate!”
