Read this first. The Missoula Electric Cooperative rebate is for homes that heat with electricity today. If your house heats with gas, that one does not apply to you. We would rather say so here than at your kitchen table.

    • Requires ENERGY STAR rating, or SEER2 of 15.2 or higher and HSPF2 of 8.5 or higher.

    • Current program cycle runs through June 30, 2027.

How it works

What actually happens, start to finish

  1. Free estimate

    We come out and look at the actual house. You get a clear scope and a number, at no charge, with nothing attached to it.

  2. Load calculation and sizing

    The equipment gets sized off a real load calculation for your house, not a square-footage chart. Insulation, windows, air sealing and which way the place faces all move the answer. This is the step that decides whether the system carries a February inversion or hands the job to backup heat.

  3. Installation

    Equipment set, refrigerant lines run and concealed properly, the outdoor unit placed above the snow line and clear of drifting, condensate handled so it drains where it should, and the electrical coordinated with the disconnect set.

  4. Startup and walkthrough

    The system is evacuated, charged and commissioned with the charge verified rather than estimated. Then we walk you through running it before we leave, and the rebate paperwork goes in.

What is a ductless mini-split?

A ductless mini-split is an outdoor unit connected to one or more indoor heads by a small refrigerant line, so it heats and cools a room without any ductwork at all. It is the fix for the addition that never got heat, the above-garage apartment, the shop, the finished basement, and the older Missoula house that was never built for forced air. Mini-splits are what we install more of than anything else.

The part that matters

Cold-climate units, sized for the house

A cold-climate mini-split keeps producing usable heat well below zero. Whether yours actually does comes down to two things nobody sees from the driveway: whether the equipment was sized off a real load calculation, and whether it was evacuated and charged properly at commissioning. That is the part we do not rush.

Unit types

Four ways a mini-split gets into a room

They all run off the same outdoor unit. The difference is where the indoor head goes and what the room will tolerate.

  • Wall mounted

    The default, and usually the right answer. It mounts high on the wall where it moves air well and stays out of the way of furniture. Wall units are the most cost-effective style to install and the quickest to retrofit, which is why most of our jobs end up here.

  • Ceiling cassette

    Sits recessed in the ceiling and throws air in four directions, so it evens out the hot and cold spots a single wall head can leave behind in a wide room. Only the grille shows, which matters when wall space is spoken for or the room needs to look finished.

    Best for
    Larger rooms, open floor plans, offices, light commercial

  • Floor mounted

    Sits low against the wall like a radiator. It is the answer when there is no usable high wall space, when the ceiling is vaulted or sloped, or under a big window where a wall unit will not fit. Heat coming in at floor level also suits an older house that feels cold underfoot.

  • Ducted (short-run)

    A slim air handler hidden in a soffit, closet or attic that feeds two or three rooms through a short duct run. You get the efficiency and zone control of a mini-split with nothing visible in the room but a grille. More work to install, and worth it when the finish matters.

    Multiple small rooms, bedroom wings, anywhere nothing should show

Why so many Missoula homes end up ductless

A lot of the housing stock through the older parts of Missoula was built without ductwork, or had it added later in whatever path the framing allowed. Retrofitting proper ducts into that kind of house means opening walls and ceilings, losing closet space, and paying for the drywall work afterwards.

A mini-split skips all of it. The line set between the outdoor unit and the indoor head is roughly three inches across, so it needs one small penetration instead of a chase. The room gets heat and air conditioning, and the house does not get taken apart to do it.

The other half of the argument is zoning. A furnace heats the whole house to one setpoint whether you are using the rooms or not. A multi-zone mini-split lets each head run at its own temperature, so you are not paying to condition a spare bedroom nobody is in.

Do mini-splits actually work in a Montana winter?

Yes, with the right equipment. This is the question we get more than any other, and the honest answer has a condition attached to it.

Cold-climate heat pumps use variable-speed compressors that keep pulling heat out of outdoor air far below freezing, and they keep producing usable heat well below zero. That is a genuinely different machine from the heat pumps that gave the technology a bad name in the 1990s.

What decides whether yours performs is sizing and commissioning. A unit sized off a square-footage chart rather than a load calculation will struggle at the bottom of the temperature range, which is exactly when you need it. So will one that was never properly evacuated before it was charged. Neither of those is visible once the covers are on, which is why installation quality matters more than the badge on the box.

One zone or several

A single-zone system is one outdoor unit and one indoor head. It is the least expensive way in, and it is the right call when you are solving one specific problem: a cold back bedroom, a shop, an apartment over the garage.

A multi-zone runs several indoor heads off one outdoor unit, each controlled on its own. It costs more up front and it is the better answer when you are conditioning most of a house, because you are not paying for several outdoor units and several sets of line work.

There is a point where a multi-zone stops making sense and a ducted system is the less expensive answer. We will tell you when you have crossed it rather than selling you eight heads.

Equipment

We install Mitsubishi Electric and American Standard equipment.

Mitsubishi Electric is what we reach for on the ductless and cold-climate side, because their cold-climate line is built for the temperatures this valley actually sees. American Standard covers the gas furnace and ducted work.

You will see both on the units in our own job photos rather than in a brochure.

Warranty

What is covered, and by whom

Equipment we install carries the manufacturer's standard warranty. The term and what falls under it depend on the manufacturer and on the specific system, and manufacturer coverage generally depends on the equipment being registered after it goes in.

We will put the actual terms for your equipment in writing with your estimate. We would rather do that than print a number on a web page that does not hold on every job.

Our own work sits alongside that. If something we installed was not installed right, we come back and put it right. Both owners are on the job, so there is nobody to hand that to.
