Missoula sits in a valley that traps cold air. Winter inversions settle in the bottom and hold there for days, which is exactly the condition that separates a heat pump sized on a real load calculation from one sized on a rule of thumb. Modern cold-climate units keep producing usable heat well below zero, but only if the equipment was matched to the house and commissioned properly.

The older housing stock through the Slant Streets, the University District and the Northside is the other half of the story. A lot of those homes were built without ductwork, or with ductwork added later and never balanced. That is the most common reason a Missoula homeowner ends up looking at ductless: retrofitting ducts into a 1920s house is invasive and expensive, and a mini-split gets the same room comfortable without opening walls.

Newer builds out toward Linda Vista, Miller Creek and Target Range are a different job again - usually a furnace and AC, or a full heat pump system sized at the plan stage.
